Service Description

According to evidence-based practice, the average adult should have an intake of 45-65% of calories from carbohydrates. This amount varies person depending on their individual needs, goals, body type, and possible conditions they may have. Social media at times creates a negative connotation around carbohydrates, however they are not bad. Our body needs carbs for energy. We just need to figure out how much you need based on your specific needs and goals. Following a controlled carbohydrate diet can be helpful for those with a consistent high blood sugar level creating a high A1c, meaning they have or may have diabetes. An A1c is the average blood sugar in your body over a three-month time period. Those who have high blood sugar may have symptoms like increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, numbness/tingling, and slow healing infections. And when your blood sugar continues to be high it can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, nephropathy, neuropathy, retinopathy, gum disease, and feet issues that may lead to an amputation. Certain carbohydrate foods may contain gluten which is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and triticale. Someone who has celiac disease have a reaction when eating gluten that triggers an immune response. The gluten is not digested and absorbed correctly. This reaction in the small intestine can injure the gastrointestinal tract lining and cause malabsorption. This option requires a 3 session minimum with your dietitian as this diet is more complex and the goal is not only to learn about the diet, but to understand how the diet and your intake correlate, and implement changes as needed.
